Quality education is fundamental to development of a well-meaning and structured social fabric where individuals strive to contribute to economic and social development. Goa has made remarkable forays into education sector and today at 87%, Goa’s literacy rate is the country’s fourth highest after Kerala, Tripura and Mizoram.
Recognizing its’ role and responsibility as one of the foremost business entities in the state of Goa, Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) has remained sensitive to its corporate social obligations and is making significant contribution in the education sector.
In order to play a constructive role in a sustained manner, MPT constituted Mormugao Port Trust Educational Society (MPTES), registered body under the Societies Registered Act 1860, in the year 1982. A modest beginning was made in the academic year of 1980-81 withcommencement of Nursery and Kindergarten classes.Thereafter, the classes were added and the first batch of students of class tenth passed out during the academic year 1990-1991.
Today, MPTES is running a Primary, Secondary and a Higher Secondary School for imparting quality education to children of Port employees’and the entire community residing around the port precincts and the town of Vasco.MPTES, a professionally managed body comprising of the representatives of the Chairman, Mormugao Port Trust, who is also the President of MPTES, and manages the affairs of the three schools under its ambit.
The schools are housed in airy and spacious buildings within the port campus complete with internet connection, computer labs, buses, large playground, and indoor court.
The Primary School initially commenced with 198 students and 16 teaching and non-teaching staff in the year 1980-1981. The school now has a strength of 657 students and 37 teaching and non-teaching staff during the current academic year.
The Secondary School started with 32 students in the year 1985-86 and now has a current strength of 983 students with 52 teaching and non-teaching staff in the current academic year.
The Higher Secondary School with Science and Commerce stream started in the year 1993-1994 with 58 students and is now having a strength of 581 students with 42 teaching and non-teaching staff in the current academic year.
Together, the schools run by MPTES impart quality education to 2100+ students annually.
These educational institutions have been aptly christened as Deepvihar School, literally meaning the abode of light or wisdom. Upholding the tradition of “Guru Devo Bhava”, MPTES honours all the teachers and non-teaching staff on the Teachers’ Day on 5th September each year.
MPTES will continuously strive to provide a conducive environment that promotes education as a blossom-medium for grooming the character and intrinsic potentials of children and in sculpting out of them a responsible and dutiful citizen of India.
